I propose that the five pillars of effective education for the 21st Century, captured by the acronym SMART, are as follows:
S- Standards. Teaching and learning must be founded in sound outcome-based standards
M- Methods of Authentic Learning. Students gain greater understanding through real-world contexts and engagements
A- Authentic Assessment. Student understanding is best measured through creative application
R- Reflection. Both students and educators must engage in ongoing reflection and development to improve practice
T- Technology. Digital learning tools are vital to deepening student understanding and success in the 21st Century

For thoughts on current practice and reflections on some of the latest research on each of the five pillars please click on the Pages in the left margin. I will be continuously uploading and linking content that I hope you will find meaningful in our collective pursuit to help develop young people with excellence.
